Rome Prepares for Pope Francis' Funeral
Rome is gearing up for the funeral of Pope Francis this Saturday (26), with enhanced security measures including:
- Patrols on the Tiber River
- Drones for surveillance
- Snipers positioned around St. Peter's Square
Over 200,000 people are expected, including heads of state like U.S. President Donald Trump and royals from Spain, Sweden, and Belgium.
Roberto Massucci, the chief of Rome's police, noted the challenge of coordinating the simultaneous arrival of global authorities.
Approximately 2,000 local police officers and numerous national security personnel will be involved. Nearby streets will be closed, as the details of the procession to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore are finalized.
Pope Francis passed away on Monday (21) at the age of 88. Since Wednesday (23), thousands have visited St. Peter's Basilica to pay their respects. The funeral will commence at 5 AM (Brasília time) on Saturday.
The Civil Defense anticipates that attendees will also line the 4 km route between the Vatican and the basilica, crossing the Tiber River.
The airspace over Rome has been closed since Monday, with the arrival of foreign delegations being managed through Fiumicino, Ciampino, and Pratica di Mare airports.
The railway company Trenitalia is adding approximately 260,000 seats for travel to Rome, while airport operators expect up to 20,000 additional passengers during the Easter holiday period.
Attention in Rome will remain high after the funeral, with expectations that the conclave to elect the new pope will begin after May 6.
