Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat) announced on Monday (Jun. 9, 2025) that he will sue President Donald Trump (Republican) for deploying National Guard troops to Los Angeles, California.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Newsom claimed that Trump acted “illegally” by implementing this measure.

The lawsuit stems from a Saturday (Jun. 7) decision allowing the mobilization of the National Guard in cases of “rebellion or danger of rebellion.” Trump justified this by stating that California’s police were insufficient to control protests against anti-immigration measures.

Newsom argued that the Los Angeles Police Department was capable of managing the protests, indicating that federal intervention was unnecessary.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta commented that the Trump administration acted without consulting the governor and against “the wishes of local law.” He stated, “This exceeds federal authority under the law and violates the 10th Amendment [of the Constitution].” Bonta also mentioned that the lawsuit would include Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

In his X post, Newsom emphasized that Trump’s measure extends beyond California, allowing the National Guard to be deployed in any state, as the memorandum does not specify any geographic limits.

Trump responded on Truth Social, suggesting that Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass should thank him instead of “lying to the people of California and America” about federal intervention.

On the same day, border czar Tom Homan indicated he might arrest the California governor if he interfered with National Guard operations, stating, “It is a federal crime to harbor or conceal an illegal immigrant.”

After Newsom challenged Homan to arrest him, Trump remarked he would support such an action if he were Homan.

Newsom expressed his concerns, stating, “This is a day I never expected to see in the United States. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or Republican; this is a line we cannot cross as a nation – a clear step toward authoritarianism.”
