Attack in Ukraine: A missile strike in Sumy, northern Ukraine, on Sunday morning (April 13, 2024), resulted in at least 32 deaths and 80 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, condemned the attack and called for a strong international response against Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. Among the victims, 2 children were reported killed and another 10 injured.

Zelensky emphasized the need for the world to avoid silence or indifference: "Russian attacks deserve only condemnation," he stated.

The president pointed out that it is the second month of Putin ignoring the U.S. president Donald Trump's proposal for a total ceasefire. He warned that without significant pressure, Russia will continue to prolong the war.

Sumy is located just 25 km from the Russian border and is a military hub in Ukraine. The missiles struck a civil area in the city center, where many were en route to church for Palm Sunday.

The Interior Minister Klymenko stated that civilians were caught in the attack while in the streets, vehicles, and public transport. He described the incident as a “deliberate destruction of civilians” on a significant religious holiday.

Andriy Yermak, Zelensky's chief of staff, noted the missiles contained fragmentation munitions, aiming to maximize civilian casualties.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack as well, saying, “Everyone knows it is only Russia that wants this war.” He criticized Russia's disregard for human life and international law.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his dismay over the Russian attacks on civilians in Sumy, stating that Russia should be forced into a ceasefire: “Putin needs to agree to a total and immediate ceasefire, unconditionally,” he asserted.
